OB update re voting for joint congregational meeting Aug. 22nd in Elgin – THERE WILL BE A MOTION PUT FORWARD BY OB AT THE START OF THE MEETING ALLOWING ADHERENTS TO VOTE.
Chair, Official Board
August 22nd, 2021, Joint Service Elgin/Portland United Churches and final Profile recommendations.
A decision was made that because number of vaccines in the province are not going up as fast as expected and Covid numbers are going the wrong way we are going to use the Lion’s Hall.
The Joint Service of the Elgin/Portland Pastoral Charge will be held at the Lion’s Hall in Elgin. Time will be 10 am for the start of the service led by Liz Church. The joint meeting will follow the service and will be chaired by Cam McKay.
Our pastoral Charge supervisor for the day will be Wayne Harris chair of Pastoral Relations for the Region.
Voting will be done by secret ballot and Liz Church and Ted Brett our Regional reps will oversee the counting along with Wayne Harris.
The Hall has limit capacity because of social distancing so each church will be allotted 35 spots to fill.

EPPC Joint Congregational Service at the Elgin Lions Hall
Our Joint Congregational meeting at the Lions Hall, Sunday August 22nd, is now upon us. This is an extremely important meeting, with a far reaching decision to be made. It is so easy in times such as these to be overcome and swayed by emotion. I urge everyone to consider all the facts, listen, ask questions and allow the Spirit to guide your vote. May our actions be such that we further God’s work in our communities.
Chair, EUC Council.
Reminder – this weekend, Sunday August 22 will be a joint EPPC Congregational Service at the Elgin Lions Hall. The service will be led by Liz Church with musical accompaniment from Morgan Wright. It will begin at 10 AM to be followed by the Profile Committee Review at about 11 AM. Similar to our services in Portland, we will follow all COVID protocols including masks, social distancing, and checking in for contact tracing before taking your seat.
During the Profile Committee Review, the Profile Committee will present a summary of their work along with their recommendation. That will be followed by a secret vote on the recommendation from the Profile Committee. You will be provided with a ballot that will include two check boxes to indicate if you are from Elgin or Portland. Beneath that will be two check boxes to record your vote on the recommendation – either YES (you approve the recommendation) or NO (you do not approve the recommendation). The ballots will be collected and tabulated before the meeting is adjourned.
50 people from Portland United Church replied to the Profile Committee Survey earlier this year. We hope that most of them plus anyone else interesting in voting on the Profile Committee recommendation will be able to attend the review on Sunday August 22 to cast their vote.
Chair, PUC Council
Devotional Thought – August 21, 2021
Isn’t it amazing how quickly the days seem to pass? Was it not just a few weeks ago we were waiting for the summer to come? We sat on our balconies, watching the birds return from their winter sojourn. We were wrapped in our snuggly blankets, sitting out in the spring sun, enjoying a cup of coffee and wondering what this year will bring.
My mind today has gone back to Sunday. Reverend Kathy shared about experiencing awe. And I have tried to come up with the most awesome memory, one that brought me to tears, or laughter, or Awe. And I began to realize that my life is awesome. What can be more awesome than a child running into your arms for a Nana snuggle? Or was it that shopping trip with my 12-year-old granddaughter? Or the sunset over Big Rideau Lake? Or the sharing of a meal with friends? Or a Sunday service where the presence of God felt so profound?
AWESOME – My God, is an awesome God, who reigns from Heaven above with wisdom, power and love, Our God is an awesome God. From early in Scripture, we have heard and read of this Awesome God. Exodus 15:11 – Who is like you among the gods, Lord? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendour and working wonders! Or again in Psalms 66:5 – Come and see the awesome works of God on behalf of human beings.
I cannot begin to write the words to tell you all these truths you already know in your life and in your heart. But what I do know and believe is that God is always there, walking with you, carrying you when necessary, providing the strength you need and giving you guidance in your life. And so I must repeat the sentiment of the song writer, who penned the words: I fall on my knees and cry Holy! Holy! Holy!
May each of you this week experience afresh the awesomeness of God.
Peace and love to each of you,
Pastoral Care Coordinator

As we return to our more usual format of worship services, we are starting to use scripture readers again. For now, readers will use the standing mic beside the piano. Please sign up on the list on the bulletin board – you can pick your date! Should you happen to forget to do this after worship you can call the office on Wednesday or Thursday and Annette will happily put your name in.
