Devotional Thought – June 4, 2022

As I sat in A&W this week waiting for my friend to come through her surgery, the time seemed to drag on.  And I began to think about this thing we call time. What makes it appear to be too long or too short? Our imagination fills with so many thoughts.

And then my mind moves to this Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, for those who follow the church calendar. The disciples, waiting in that room. Waiting, and waiting. Did they know what they were waiting for, what to expect?

Surprise!! Fright!! Astonishment!! I have no idea. But if a tremendous gust of wind blew through our sanctuary while we were in there you can be assured, we would, even today, be terrified. Add to this the descending of fire and nothing being burned up. And the speaking of languages, most we could not understand!

It is an astounding event. I have heard it referred to: “It’s 9:00 somewhere!” This took place in the morning, 50 days after Christ’s death and there were thousands of people who experienced it. That sound ‘like’ a mighty, rushing wind, was felt by all who were present in the room. But when they started speaking in foreign languages, the sound was so loud that thousands around in Jerusalem heard it and came running. Thousands were added to the believers and a community was born.

Back to that idea of time – some would say we need another Pentecost! And yet, God never stopped filling the believers with His message. He never stopped sending us out to minister and share His love. He has never stopped wanting the world to live in peace. He has never stopped calling us. So, what happened? TIME! We have heard it said that we will find time to do the things that really matter.

I have to ask – ‘Does it matter?’

Peace and love to each of you,
