Elgin United Church

We pray for all who are experiencing illness, loss,  loneliness or difficult times that they find comfort and peace in God’s Grace.

Congratulations to all who are celebrating milestones, special occasions or simply the pleasures of life with family, friends and community.

Our sanctuary is a safe and friendly space. Don’t forget to sign up as a greeter to welcome all at worship.

We welcome Norma Wrightly and look forward to her message as she leads us in worship this Sunday.

What are the best parts of  Worshiplude?

One word: Beavertails!

Seriously though, Worshiplude gives youth and young adults a chance to experience Winterlude in Ottawa. The city comes alive to celebrate winter and offers experiences only available when it’s cold out – like skating/walking on the Rideau Canal a Unesco World Heritage site.  But the real heart of the Worshiplude weekend happens on Saturday night. We gather together at Rideau Park United Church to share a unique worship experience, eat dinner together and explore Alt Spaces with friends old and new. Worshiplude creates moments and it is in these moments that we build and strengthen our faith as the body of Christ that is the Youth and Young Adults of the United Church of Canada.

What are the Alt Spaces Events?

Alt Spaces are pop-up spaces throughout Rideau Park United Church where Worshiplude participants have the opportunity to share, engage and have fun.

This year:

Open Mic – bring your instruments and collaborate or borrow one of our frame drums to beat out a tune or maybe a ukulele to strum and stroll.

Improv & Paper Bag Theatre – Are you up for the challenge?

Hungry Hungry Humans – like Hungry Hungry Hippos…only LIFE SIZE.

Peace Forest – Meditation Space

Art Hub – crafty creations

Fiber and Threads – Weave, Knit, Crochet, Embroidery enthusiasts

Nice Ink – Tattoo space (it’s washable)

Boardgames and Hang – relax and charge your phone!

Candlelight Labyrinth

Plus a few surprises!

Can you Host an Alt Space?

Hosts are needed to help set-up and lead Alt Spaces.  You are not required to stay in the Alt Space the entire night. Set-up the space, host participants, float around and enjoy.

Please fill out the Youth Group Registration Form HERE.

Let us know you’re coming, even if you are not staying overnight.  We need numbers for food.

Registration deadline for Overnight Groups, Monday, Jan 30th.

Final Numbers for Dinner by Friday, Feb. 3rd.

Require Accommodations:

If you require accommodations for your group, you will be assigned a Host United Church in Ottawa. Devotional Thought – January 28, 2023

Every day comes as a surprise to us. And this week has been one of ups and downs, not only for me, but for many.

And in the midst of our ‘valley’ experiences, God speaks to us. The question really becomes: “Do I trust God?” At the beginning of unwanted occurrences in our lives, what is your immediate reaction? If you are like me, you want to fix it, to put it right, or to even make it go away. Of course, in most instances, you have to persevere through them.

Every week as I write my devotional for you, my friends, I write it for myself also. We all need reminders that God knows all about us, that His presence is given to us through the Holy Spirit. We are never alone.

The tragedy, the crime, the sickness is already being experienced by you. With this in mind the question then becomes: “What do I do now?” This I believe is the miracle God gives to us. Before our very eyes we are provided with necessary tools for the task – determination, and resolve. This week may require you to have strength of will. The chaos you are experiencing may be drowning you and your resolve is slipping.

Never forget. We don’t go it alone. Remember uppermost in your mind that God Himself sees your fear, your sorrow, your anger. In fact, God is outraged by injustice and suffers with you in your suffering. And God provides reinforcements – a friend calls, a card arrives in the mail, we remember that God is there for us. Somehow, we manage to move that one step forward. And that is followed by another.

Without a doubt, good people experience bad things. But I write with confidence that you will prevail – for no other reason than the God who has promised to be with you will sustain you.

Blessing and peace to each of you.
