Portland United Church Women

We are an active group of women, united and dedicated for the total mission of our church.  We meet on the third Tuesday afternoon of every month (Sept. to June) to express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian Witness, Fellowship and Service.

During these meetings we take turns and share in a devotional program, enjoy guest speakers, then engage in a business agenda where we decide on various activities and fund raisers.  Tea and goodies follow.

Being centrally located in the Four Rivers Presbytery, we have catered to both Presbyterial and Presbytery luncheons and meetings in our welcoming Gathering Room.  We take an active role in various rallies within our Presbytery.

Our members enjoy fellowship with each other and adjoining U.C.W.’s with frequent potlucks, restaurant get-togethers and fun afternoons (e.g. a Tie Dye afternoon.)

Our main goal is to support the United Church Mission and Service Fund.  We send substantial monetary payments quarterly.  We donate to our local food banks, Cases for Caring, World Development and Relief, local Interval House, and have sponsored youth in our congregation for various events, including subsidizing a trip for two to El Salvador.  We also contribute to our own church.

All this is done by a small group of members who organize and enjoy our fund raisers, which include an annual Irish Stew Dinner, Church Bake Sale, two annual pie sales (we made and sold 188 berry pies in June and 140 apple pies in September).  We cater regularly to funeral receptions, anniversary parties, birthday parties and have done wedding receptions as requested.

We involve members of our congregation and community in making prayer shawls, which we distribute in our community for both happy and sad occasions.

We also organize a roster for individuals in our congregation to prepare and serve coffee and treats for coffee hour in the Friendship Room after worship every Sunday morning.

New members are welcome and we look forward to meeting you at our next meeting.
